shadPS4 is an active but early PS4 emulator. Check the exact game and build before expecting a playable experience. End users should follow the project’s QtLauncher route rather than downloading the core and expecting a desktop interface.

What PS4 emulation can and cannot promise

The shadPS4 project describes itself as early in development and documents games that run, alongside an evolving compatibility database. That is evidence of progress, not support for the entire PS4 library. A working video of one game does not establish the state of another.

The current project separates the emulator core from its QtLauncher interface. The official repository links both the launcher releases and quickstart. Use those links because old guides may describe a bundled interface that no longer matches the download.

A practical shadPS4 setup sequence

  1. Check compatibility first. Search the exact game title and ID in the project’s compatibility resources. Read the reported build, settings and known problems.
  2. Check the current requirements. Review the official quickstart for supported hardware and operating systems. Update your graphics driver through its vendor.
  3. Download the official QtLauncher. Follow the launcher’s instructions to install/select the emulator core. Keep track of which build is selected.
  4. Prepare your own game dump. Follow the upstream quickstart. If a game needs supported system modules, use the project’s instructions for files from your own console; do not substitute a random firmware bundle.
  5. Choose one controller path. Test the physical controller directly, or select your Nexus virtual output. Establish normal buttons and sticks before experimenting with feedback.
  6. Run with a clean baseline. Test default settings, then apply only the changes documented for that game and build. Back up save data before updates.

DualShock, DualSense and Nexus profiles

shadPS4 documents Xbox and DualShock controller support and configurable controls. Nexus can provide a different game-facing controller when that suits your mapping, but it does not increase emulator compatibility. Select one device for the player and check that physical and virtual copies are not both producing input.

Do not treat a working button test as proof of touchpad gestures, motion input or adaptive resistance. Each is a separate capability. For a title requiring a particular control, check the emulator’s mapping options and the game’s documentation before substituting a keyboard shortcut.

A helpful test order is: USB connection, button mapping, both sticks, menu navigation, gameplay actions, then vibration. This makes it easier to identify the first point of failure.

When a game does not work

ObservationWhat to investigate
You downloaded only a command-line coreReturn to the official QtLauncher releases and follow its setup instructions.
The game is missing from the libraryCheck the configured game directory and supported dump structure.
A game crashes in the same sceneCompare the exact game ID and emulator version with compatibility reports. Save logs before changing settings.
Controller input is doubledCheck duplicate physical/virtual devices and overlapping mappers.
A new build regresses a working gameKeep a separate copy of the previously working configuration and report the build difference. Do not overwrite your only save backup.

Describe the scene and steps precisely when reporting a problem. “Does not work” leaves out whether the game failed to scan, boot, draw graphics or accept input. Include relevant logs after removing personal file paths.

If you want to play now

For a game that is not usable in the emulator, a native PC release or Remote Play from your own PS4 may be a better route. Remote Play streams the console; it is not PS4 emulation. Check the game and service requirements before deciding whether either alternative meets your needs.

Common questions

Can shadPS4 run every PS4 game?

No. Treat compatibility as game- and build-specific, and check current official reports.

Is the emulator core the same as the launcher?

No. The core performs emulation; the QtLauncher provides the end-user interface and setup workflow.

Will Nexus fix a game crash?

Nexus can help with controller mappings. It does not repair emulator graphics, game dumps or unsupported system behavior.
