RPCS3 is the PS3 emulator to start researching for desktop play. Check your specific game before installation: reaching a menu, running in-game and being comfortably playable are different results.

Start with the official RPCS3 project

RPCS3 is a free, open-source PS3 emulator for Windows, Linux, macOS and FreeBSD. Its official repository points to rpcs3.net for downloads, requirements and quickstart instructions. Use those sources rather than similarly named download sites.

This guide is an installation plan and controller troubleshooting workflow, not a performance review. No frame-rate claim here is based on hands-on benchmarking. PS3 emulation can be sensitive to the particular game and CPU; a strong graphics card alone does not establish suitability.

Prepare your first game

  1. Open the official compatibility database and search the game by title and serial. Read the linked game wiki notes, not just its category label.
  2. Compare your PC with the current RPCS3 quickstart requirements. On Windows, the project also points to Microsoft’s Visual C++ redistributable and current graphics drivers.
  3. Get the emulator through the official download page. Extract all files into a writable folder rather than launching an executable from inside an archive.
  4. Download PS3 system software from Sony’s official support page. Follow RPCS3’s firmware-installation instructions; this is separate from installing the emulator itself.
  5. Prepare your own game dump using the appropriate disc or digital-game instructions in RPCS3’s quickstart. Keep required personal license data private.
  6. Launch one game at default settings, check its controls and make an in-game save before adding patches or changing global options.

Game installation differs between disc dumps and digital packages. A renamed archive is not automatically a valid game dump. Follow the upstream format-specific instructions and keep the game serial, update and region consistent.

Configure controller input deliberately

Open RPCS3’s controller configuration and select the handler/device appropriate to your physical controller or Nexus virtual output. Assign player one, then check button and stick responses before launching. Start with a direct USB connection if you are diagnosing an uncertain Bluetooth setup.

Keep the paths separate: RPCS3 reads inputs; Nexus may transform those inputs before RPCS3 sees them. A mapping shown as working in Nexus still needs the correct device selection inside the emulator. If using a physical controller directly, ensure your hiding configuration has not made it unavailable to RPCS3.

  • For a Nexus profile, choose the output required by your mapping and bind that virtual device.
  • For a direct controller path, avoid simultaneously feeding a remapped duplicate into the same player.
  • For motion-sensitive or pressure-sensitive actions, read the game and handler documentation. Ordinary button response does not prove those extra features.
  • Save a separate per-game configuration when a title needs different controls.

A useful report includes the emulator version, operating system, CPU/GPU, game serial, steps to reproduce and relevant logs. Remove personal paths and license data before posting. Keep a dated copy of saves before updates so testing does not risk your only progress.

What a controller mapper cannot fix

Nexus does not change RPCS3’s game compatibility, supply a PS3 game license, or repair an incomplete dump. Its value is reusable control customization. Likewise, a DualSense adaptive-trigger effect designed in Trigger Lab is a local effect; it does not make a PS3 title author native PS5-style feedback.

Common questions

Does RPCS3 include games?

No. Follow the official instructions for your own game dumps and any required license data.

Can a PS3 emulator run PS4 or PS5 games?

RPCS3 targets PS3. Use the separate PS4 and PS5 guides to understand those systems’ very different status.

Should I copy someone else’s performance settings?

Only after checking the game serial, emulator version and the reason for each setting. Start with defaults and documented per-game guidance.
